April Budgeting Tip:
Trying to save for retirement, fund an emergency account, and pay off bills all while trying to maintain current life and expenses can be hard. Here are a couple of options, first you could concentrate on each for a 3 or 6 month period, this will allow you to pay off debt or fully fund your emergency account, if more time is needed then take it, there is no time limit. Each time you pay off a credit card, close it until you are down to one, and keep the one open that gives you the most perks or points. Another option is to use direct debit to fund all your accounts at the same time, this could take a little longer to pay off debts and fund the emergency account, but you will be tackling everything at once. Remember to not incur new debt as you pay off debt, the whole idea is to get rid of debt, not make room for new debt. New cars usually come with a 5 to 6 year loan, so if you can hold on to your car for an extra year or two, you could significantly pay off other debt, fund your emergency account and save for retirement. Consider a $500 monthly car payment, over 12 months it adds up to $6,000 and over 24 months it adds up to $12,000, which could pay off debt or fund an emergency account, if you just hold off on buying that new car. Don't forget, with a new car comes higher insurance costs and license fees. Saving can be difficult, but when you start to see the rewards of more money in the bank, less stress and less debt, you will feel it is worth it and be happy you stuck with it. You can do this. Good luck.
